Revenue Streams in Music – How do Hip Hop Artists Make Money?

If your biggest dream is to become a success in the hip hop music industry, you will face the task of balancing your music and your bank account at the same time. It's in your best interest to spend as much time as possible creating music, but if you live in the real world, you have to have a job.

Let's take a look at the common trends in making money as an artist in the hip hop community. First, you have CD sales, but with the introduction of companies like iTunes, CD sales have never been lower. Then there's always touring and the merchandise that can be sold on tours. And, of course, there are publishing royalties and performance royalties if your song gets played on the radio.

But let's face it, if you don't ALREADY have the exposure and the funds to go on tour, you can't expect to make any money with these “tried and true” methods. If no one knows who you are, nobody is going to buy your CD. Nobody is going to know about your concert. Nobody will feel cool wearing your T-shirt.

A change has occurred in the music industry, and it matters to artists on the rise and also those who have already been successful. People are looking to the internet for music.

They want music, they look on the internet. They want to see who's popular, they hit up the internet. They want to buy a T-shirt for their sister's favorite artist, they can always find it on the internet. If you, as an artist, don't exist on the internet, if you don't have your own website where people can download your latest song, read your blog and purchase your merchandise, you might as well not exist at all.

The benefit of this change to new Hip Hop artists is that it has made it a lot easier and cheaper for someone to make money while still focusing on the business of music.

You need to make an album? It could cost upwards of $7,000 to hire a team of mix engineers and producers! The most cost-and-time-effective way to create your sound is to purchase Hip Hop instrumentals from a non-exclusive beat site. You can buy hip hop music with 100% radio quality beats for about $20 per track at www.makeyourhit.com, and the service includes additional production assistance after the tracks have been recorded.

You need to make a video? You don't need to hire a producer and a cameraman and sign your check (and creative control) away to a group of business executives – you can create your own video and air it on YouTube! Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and other social network sites are also available for you to gain exposure, all for free.

Once you have your own website, you can set up a free PayPal account and make your music available for download. After that, the networking options are endless. You could rent out ad space on your website, or get involved in affiliate marketing. If you can create enough exposure, your website will soon become a self-reliant, money-making machine – and that way you can focus on making the music happen your way.

MIXING - NEW COMPANY CHANGES

I want to inform you about the changes in my company, N8Beats Mixing starting January 1st. As of January 1st, I will be hiring a mixing manager, Rob Young, alongside master mixing engineers that I have been training for the past month. Due to this, a few things will happen.

1) The price for mixes will raise from $100 to $150

2) You are guaranteed a mix completion date (unless you decide that more fixes are needed, whereby we will push the date forward.)

3)
For mixing, every single new client will deal with my mixing manager / co-producer Rob Young. All current clients (2009 and back) will speak to me, only - as I like to keep my relationships with those who were there from the beginning.

4)
You will never have to worry about me being too booked up to work on your music, because I have additional engineers working on your project.

5)
Your music will be mixed by MASTER Mixing Engineers. I have interviewed too many to mention, and spent hours training them. Your music will ALWAYS receive my personal stamp of approval, prior to you hearing the final mix. We will continue to revise the song until the engineer perfects your mix, guaranteed.

As always, you will have the option, at no additional charge, to ask for additional fixes if the mix does not meet your standards. The goal is to create perfection in the mix, so if you ever have issues with a mix, never hesitate to contact us.

Thanks, all - and I am excited in taking this step in improving the quality of our services to you, and improving the quality of your music.

Portland George Album Release

I've had tons of artists calling me, emailing me and approaching me, asking me if I have any artists that I've been working with since the gate. For the longest, I've hesitated to speak on the subject. It has been a bit of a sore one for me. 11 years as a music producer, and not a single artist from my childhood group, Deep Incisions, released a single album. Well those times are over. I'm proud to say that my good buddy, whom I've known since 13 years old, George Robins A.K.A. 44 Cal, of the Syndicate Mob, has released his debut single.

I was blown away by his eclectic mix of what I expected: incredible lyrical heat & pristine delivery, and what I did not expect: amazing, thoroughly thought out hooks, and a true signature sound. Click here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/PortlandGeorge to take a listen to his album. I produced a few tracks on the album, including track 2, "Portland". There are some other fantastic producers on the album, so if you are interested in working with any of them, holler at me, I'll holler at George, we'll get some new producers some shine. If you're interested in featuring George on your tracks, I can vouch for him, he's a man about his business, and will bless your track with an unmistakable coat of heat.

I am truly touched to know that a childhood friend of mine still has the passion to release his music, and hope that my other Portland natives follow suit, and take control of the wheel in their own lives, the way George has done; not only as a recording artist, but as an adult - a father.

One love, 44. It's still D.I. over here, baby!

STAY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE NEXT ALBUM RELEASE ON SYNDICATE MOB: D-GUN

ARTISTS OF THE MONTH:
Some Artists Just "Get It" (The Lil Wayne of Australia)!
In the past 11 years, I have worked with over 600 recording artists. I know, crazy. They range in dedication the same way they range in skill and business know-how. If you look up the word "Dilligence" and "Determination" in the N8Beats dictionary, you'll find a picture of Josh Lewan. Josh has recorded over 20 songs in the past 3 weeks, and there's no sign of stopping. The dude just showed up out of nowhere, and started bombarding me with tracks. He has the determination, the image, and an understanding of how to present oneself. I'll keep you posted on his up & coming project, when it releases.

What the $!#&$*??? Where did THIS guy come from?
MONTIE: If I've worked with over 600 recording artists in the past 11 years, you can imagine how many songs I've heard. There's no nice way to say it, people don't really impress me anymore. It's all the same b.s. But today, I smacked the shit out of my knee. You see, I opened an email from a makeyourhit.com artist, Montie, and pressed play. When the music came on, my knee spazzed out and knocked itself upside the sharpest corner on my desk. This dude is bananas! He has a long way to go before perfecting his craft, but I have to say, he sure is one crazy amazing hip hop songwriter. You don't hear of those often, but he is one... A true Hip Hop songwriter. Once his project releases, I'll drop his iTunes link on my blog so you can all cop it, and shortly after quit rapping altogether.

HOT BEAT - U2 "With or Without You" Remix:
So I was in the car with Rob Young, my co-producer, and U2 With or Without you came on. We both looked at each other and we knew what had to be done... Remix time. Click on the video to the left and take a peep at the remix, let me know what you think!

N8Beats Production Signs Publishing Deal: Rob Young and I met with Chris Austria of IDC and Urban Tiger Music earlier today. Tomorrow, we will officially ink our first non-exclusive publishing deal! For more info in Chris and IDC, check out their website http://www.independentdistro.com

$20 HIP HOP BEATS, AND A REAL PRODUCER YOU CAN TALK TO ON THE PHONE.......

YOU SEE, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL OF THESE ONLINE HIP HOP BEATS WEBSITES AND WWW.MAKEYOURHIT.COM IS THIS:
I started http://www.MakeYourHit.com for two purposes. After spending 10 years in a recording studio selling beats from $500 to $5,000 I realized that there was only a small percentage of artists able to afford my beats. It wasn't the most TALENTED artists, but instead, the most WEALTHY. I decided that it was time for the true talent to be given an opportunity.

With Make Your Hit, I not only offer Radio Quality Beats with a Satisfaction Guarantee, but I also offer:
- SFX that match your vocals
- Breakdowns
- 1-on-1 Lessons on Cadence, song structure, vocal projection, staying in the pocket, 3rd verse purpose, album structure, vocal image, and more. - Mixing - Mastering
- Custom Beats
- Produce your entire album or mixtape with a producer, who cares about YOUR project.

www.MakeYourHit.com is the ONLY hip hop site online that offers full album music production to the public. ALL beats on the site are $20, and you get a true opportunity to be heard.

Check me out, and email me with any questions. Thanks for the opportunity to get the word out on my beats, and my service...
